Information
for International Students
Welcome to
Muhlenberg! Founded in 1848, Muhlenberg College provides challenging academics and excellent teaching within a warm, caring community environment. The College is located in the suburbs of Allentown, Pennsylvania--a city of approximately 105,000
located one hour north of Philadelphia and one and a half hours west of New York City. Students enjoy easy access to these two major metropolitan resources, as well as the beauty and green space of Muhlenberg's
90-acre main campus.
The vibrant Lehigh Valley,
of which Allentown and several nearby cities are a part, offers a
huge variety of cultural, dining, and entertainment opportunities.
Energetic and active, Muhlenberg students participate in activities that contribute to a vibrant campus community. From
performing arts (theatre
and dance and music) to community service to athletics to multicultural life, the dynamic reach of our students extends to encompass the entire Lehigh Valley community.
International students are invited to explore Muhlenberg through this website, as well as by visiting campus if you have the chance. Allentown is served by Lehigh Valley International Airport, which uses most major American airlines. Easy connections can be made via Philadelphia or Newark Airports, and the Muhlenberg campus is only 15 minutes by car away from Lehigh Valley International Airport.
Muhlenberg is on a semester
schedule with the first semester beginning in late August and ending in
late December. The second semester begins in mid-January and ends in mid-May.
How to Apply
International students can
apply online via the Common Application.
Paper applications are also accepted. The $50 application fee is waived for international students for whom it would represent a financial hardship. The deadline for application for the fall semester is
February 15th.
Admission Standards and Required Tests:
Due to the rigor of our academic programs, Muhlenberg has a very competitive,
thorough admission process. A strong secondary school record is imperative.
This record includes strong classroom performance, as well as extracurricular
activities. As interviews on campus are virtually impossible for foreign
students, personal statements and teacher recommendations are very important.
Either the Scholastic Aptitude
Test (SAT) or the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required.
Proficiency
in English:
The proficient use of English is a necessity for a Muhlenberg education.
All courses demand a strong knowledge of the English language. The Test of English as a Foreign
Language (TOEFL) is required if other test results are unavailable. Muhlenberg
requires a TOEFL score of 550 or higher (paper) or 213 (computer).
Financial
Aid
Muhlenberg College seeks to enroll
international students and values the diversity of perspectives those
students bring to the Muhlenberg campus. The College offers a limited
number of scholarships per entering class to international
students. For the purposes
of financial aid, international students fall into two groups: those who
are U.S. citizens or permanent residents are considered for financial
aid as we would any student living in the United States; those who are
citizens of another country and do not enjoy permanent resident status
within the U.S. are competing for the limited international aid
described above.
Academic Programs
As part of a comprehensive liberal arts education, the College offers a core curriculum that ensures exposure to a broad variety of disciplines--from fine arts to physical sciences. Students' ability to choose from among many course offerings within the required curriculum gives them a strong voice in shaping their own educational experience. A knowledgeable and supportive group of faculty advisors assures that requirements are being met while interests are being encouraged.
Muhlenberg is well known for the strength of its pre-professional programs (pre-law, pre-medicine, education), as well as such academic disciplines as business, psychology, English,
communication, political science, theatre arts and dance. The College offers
majors in more than 40 fields, as well as self-designed major options. A nationally recognized
Career Center, a variety of internship opportunities, and a strong alumni network help students take on the world beyond the Muhlenberg campus.
Residential Life
Approximately 96% of Muhlenberg's full-time students reside on campus.
Students who enter as freshmen are provided with housing throughout their
four years at Muhlenberg. Each student residence is furnished with a bed,
mattress, desk and desk chair, and dresser. Each room has
a telephone jack, computer internet jack and cable TV capability. Laundry
facilities and vending machines are available in all residence halls.
Linens and refrigerators may be rented from the College.
