Study Abroad

Have you studied abroad? Are you considering studying abroad?

The opportunity to study and explore what lies outside Muhlenberg's walls and Allentown, Pennsylvania may seem like a vacation but it's also an amazing educational experience! The study abroad experience cultivates intrinsically unique opportunities from which different skills, such as language, independence, and flexibility develop. Be proud of them and use them!

Unless you take the initiative to record your experiences, many of the specifics of your semester(s) abroad - which will be of interest to employers/graduate schools - may be lost. If you have studied abroad, take the time to fill out this section of the portfolio! If you are considering going abroad, bring the portfolio along with you and complete it as you go. At the very least keep good notes, perhaps a journal, and complete this section when you return.

Keep a note of the classes that you take while abroad, your professors' names, any projects that you do and books that you read. (You can include these in the Coursework section.) Keep any important brochures and handouts. Write down networking contacts that you make, historical sites that you see, and internships and jobs that you hold or take interest in. Most importantly, reflect. You are gaining a lot more from your experience abroad than a stamp on your passport! Take the time to think about what the experience has meant for you and how your view of the world has changed. The little time that this takes will be worthwhile once you're back at the 'Berg. Plus, you'll have a tangible piece of your experience to hold on to.
