Self-assessment is the first step in the Career Development and Job Search processes. It is very important to know about yourself in order to make informed, purposeful decisions. You will be much happier in a major and a career that you love and that suits you. Considering your interests, skills, and values will help you find the career and courses that you love!
This section of your portfolio includes the Career Center's Self-Assessment Guide. This guide takes you through the self-assessment process step-by-step, helping you to explore your interests, skills, and values. When going through this guide consider the things that you have already logged on your citizenship, summer jobs, coursework, advising notes, and awards sheets. Chances are many of the things you have participated in so far are ones that you are good at and that you enjoy doing-- these would be considered your interests. Many of the skills that you have developed so far probably come from your summer jobs, leadership activities, and volunteer activities, so be sure to look back at these log sheets when completing the skills identification section of the guide. The accomplishments that you are most proud of so far (probably logged on your sheets) would be great ideas to consider when exploring your values. Good luck with this section of the portfolio. Consider doing one section of the guide at a time because it is a lot to think about in one sitting. Remember - look back at your log sheets! Re-visit this section as you do new activities and have new experiences that help you learn something else about yourself. |
