Summer Jobs/Internships

Log Sheets    **    Reflection Questions    **    Sample Internships

Having a summer job or an internship is a great way to gain experience in a career field you would like to pursue, or are just thinking about, and to gain skills that would be relevant in a future career field. It provides you not only with the opportunity to gain skills and experience, but to possibly make money and/or receive college credit.

Finding a summer job or an internship may seem like an overwhelming process, but you can do it. To get started in the process think about what you are looking for...

  • what career field interests you?
  • what kind of experience you want to have?
  • what types of skills you hope to gain?
  • where you want to live?
  • what kind of money or credit you hope to receive?

  • The Career Center offers a Summer Jobs and Internships workshop several times each semester. You can also make an appointment to speak with a counselor about possibilities.

Here are some ideas about where to look for a summer job or internship:

  • visit the Career Center's Resource Library
  • talk with a professor in your major or field of interest
  • talk to friends and family members
  • use any connections you may have in the field
  • conduct research on the web (the Career Center web site has some great links)
  • access the Job Listings page through your Career Connections account

  • The log sheets will help you to keep track of the summer jobs and internship experiences that you have had, or are considering. The reflection questions will help you think about what you have gained from your experiences. You can then refer to these when completing your resume. It is a good idea to jot down the responsibilities that you have had in these positions so you will be able to remember the accomplishments that you have made. If there is a particular person at your job or internship who you feel would be a good connection to have in the future or who could serve as a reference, then make sure you keep track of that person's name and contact information on the log sheet. You can also write down ideas for internships that you would like to obtain so you can keep track of all of your different career interests and ideas.
