Goals and Objectives To promote opportunities for faculty and students to link coursework and research to recycling efforts on campus, including establishment of procedures by which the success of these efforts can be measured; to encourage faculty from all disciplines to use these assessments as pedagogical resources; to support faculty/student research in this area.
Short-Term Recommendations
- Recruit faculty from a broad range of departments on campus interested in developing recycling assessment activities in their courses or as part of their research program. Efforts here will begin with environmental science, environmental studies, and biology, but more broadly seek to join faculty from all disciplines in these efforts.
- Collect data from trash/recycling hauler about the composition of our waste stream to establish a base line and establish a schedule for monitoring future composition (e.g., quarterly).
- Educate the campus community about expectations and procedures regarding recycling, including how housekeeping separates and manages our waste stream.
- Establish a procedure by which compliance is monitored in-house. Of specific interest is how well recyclables are separated.
- Residence life can work with plant operations to assess composition and compliance in residence halls.
- Set up incentives to improve compliance (e.g., contests, prizes, etc.).
- Housekeeping and interested student and faculty volunteers could periodically assess compliance in academic buildings.
- Independent research projects could be undertaken to collect data on compliance.
- Make public the findings as part of our efforts to establish a new ‘campus culture’ which encourages and expects recycling.
Long-Term Recommendations
- Monitor changes in waste stream periodically (according to time frame established under short-term recommendations) and track trends in consultation with trash/recycling hauler.
- Coordinate trash/recycling data with in-house monitoring and follow up on trends to make improvements as necessary.
- Make public the findings of on-going assessment.
- Review compliance and make recommendations as necessary.
Structure for Implementation
- Information about expectations for members of the community could be disseminated during orientation for new students and faculty.
- Work with faculty to support their efforts to link curricula and research to the new recycling program.
- Will work with faculty and students to share findings with the campus community, via the website for campus greening and other forums.
