As the Punk rock movement leaked into the mainstream, people began to create their own images and stereotypes of the punk rocker. The "normal," everyday person, from all classes, became blinded with the images of black leather, make-up, and Mohawks. Most were unable to see through the different styles that this movement brought to the surface. They were ambushed by the repugnant tendencies of Iggy Pop to dress like a woman and shave his eyebrows, as well as the original style of the Sex Pistols. Punk rockers were

"...alluding to anything that would induce immediate outrage" (Burchill and Parsons, Friedlander).


Although these people were able to see this extreme image portrayed on the outside, they failed to see the inner meaning of it all. They failed to put together the pieces of the puzzle. They lacked the knowledge of the symbolic meaning for which this style was created.
