Modern
surfing really began with Hawaiian riders at the 1956 Olympics in Melbourne.
It quickly gained popularity,
especially through popular songs by the
Beach Boys and Chuck Berry's "Surfin' USA."
For the first few years of this movement, the
public viewed surfers in a favorable light and held the
opinion
that '99.9% of
boardriders are wonderful young people with a fine approach to sport.'
