The smile, though simple, is one of our most basic forms of communication. It has also been proven that a simple smile, actually makes one feel content. The smile is universal through all cultures. However, the smile doesn't always indicate contentment. It can indicate an easygoing person, lack of tension, and overall wellbeing of a person from within. Adversely, it can also represent mocking, laughter, slyness and meanness. The connotations giving by different facial expressions of others allow people to govern their actions. People need others to show some sort of emotion as a form of feedback in communication. One can tell if a person is understanding what is being said by the subtle changes in facial expressions throughout a conversation. True contentment is illustrated when the smile is combined with the widely open eyes. If the patient draws himself this way, it is possible that he is content. However, he could be hiding behind false emotions. This confusing aspect to human nature of the mind forces the therapist to take into account every aspect of the person's life. |
