While You Sleep... documents the trials and tribulations of a third shift convenience store worker, and a late-night diner employee. The film begins with a lonely sequence of nighttime shots of empty buildings, deserted streets, and illuminated signs. Coming to rest at a convenience store on the west side of Allentown, Pennsylvania, the film moves inside to interview one of the workers who describes the tedium of her job. Her interview sets the tone for an interview with a rather extraordinary employee of a 24 hour diner in nearby Easton, Pennsylvania. From the Ivy League to the world of hard realities, Gary communicates the pathos of his slow descent.
