This figure resembles the Ewe figures called alegba, named for the protective deities that they represent. These figures, made of unfired clay, show simplified human forms with cowrie shell eyes. Alegba are family deities. They are associated with a particular family member and believed to protect the entire household. Their primary function is to protect. They ward off enemies, cure insanity or disease, provide guidance and promote longevity and prosperity.
