Akan Goldweights

Abstract or geometric forms of goldweights are often believed to be older than the figural and other goldweight forms. Many geometric goldweights forms have notched edges and raised surface decorations. Beginning in the 1500s, these types of goldweights displayed bars, triangles, or swastikas on their raised surfaces. Over time, many of the designs have been obscured, leaving uncertainty when considering the symbolism. It is widely accepted that goldweights express complex philosophical ideas of the Asante peoples and retain concepts about the nature of the universe and the interrelationship of natural forces within them.
