Akan Goldweights

Asante (Ghana)
Goldweight
Brass

Goldweights in the form of animals represent one or more proverbs or maxims. In instances where only one animal comprises the goldweight, it is difficult to tell which particular proverb the figure conveys. For instance, the leopard is both feared and admired for its speed, agility, and ability to catch its prey. A turtle, on the other hand, may be attributed with the good sense to distance itself from danger. Another example, a bird with round, spiral wings, is a traditional symbol of life, rebirth, and regeneration.
