Indigo-dyed strip cloths are attributed to Asante under the name kyekye. Simple patterns of indigo-dyed blue and undyed white strips or checkerboard patterns are common. Indigo cloths, while beautiful in color and pattern, are typically used daily for general purposes. Kyekye cloths originally were produced from the Bondoukou peoples of the Côte d'Ivoire as cotton is not grown in the forests of the Akan country. Demand for affordable cloths often was met by importing cloths from the Côte d'Ivoire.
