Jewelry and adornment of the body is common and expected in West African culture. Beauty is an important aspect of the cultural backdrop and all types of accessories are worn within West African society. Necklaces, anklets, bracelets, rings, earrings, beads, all in great quantities, are viewed not only as items for adornment but also to transfer and demonstrate symbols and social rites. A single piece of jewelry can tell a great deal about a person including social status, marital status, age, gender, or hierarchy, and ethnic group. For example, tribal chiefs wear an excess of gold jewelry and other fashionable pieces made from the earth's materials. Heavy cast bronze or hammered metal bracelets or anklets are commonly displayed and worn. Often used in ceremony and daily social interaction, these items symbolize wealth, power, and established status when worn by women.
