A kente cloth is type of narrow strip cloth made by both Asante and Ewe peoples. It often boasts brilliant colors and complex designs. Most West African kente cloths have strips that are approximately four inches wide. They usually incorporate weft designs. Warps may be a solid color or striped. After being woven, strips are sewn together, causing a patchwork appearance. Asante kente cloths use more intricate designs, fine threads and a variety of colors when compared to other West African weaves. The most expensive kente cloth, in which the entire warp is covered with weft designs would take an experienced weaver about one to two months to complete.
