Senufo (Côte d'Ivoire)
Korhogo Cloth
Cotton |
Narrow strip cloths of plain white cotton are often dyed or painted. Men weave the strip cloth on a horizontal loom and women sew the strips together. The Senufo of the Côte d'Ivoire paint the cloth in a direct linear method to form images of various animals, figures, and patterns. Weaving large strip cloth textiles is a time consuming process; therefore, they are expensive and valued as a status symbol in West Africa.
