Shortly following the European's discovery of tobacco in the Americas,
they introduced the plant to Africa. An easily cultivated crop, tobacco
quickly gained popularity across the continent becoming a staple in many
African communities. Pipes and related smoking accessories represent
wealth and status much like their role in western culture. Decorative
carvings, unique incising techniques, and stylistic variety are
reserved for the area of the pipe bowl as seen in this example with a
carved human head serving as the tobacco orb or bowl.
