Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989)
Portrait of Picasso conceived as the
Emperor Napoleon, 1970
Etching and drypoint
The Spanish surrealist, Salvador Dali, remains one of the most popular
artists of the twentieth century. His dreamlike yet disturbing landscape
paintings and drawings convey the epitome of Surrealism. The intimate yet
strong composition, Persistence of Memory of 1931 and the Portrait of
Picasso as Napoleon demonstrates the parameters of his unique style. The
integration of unrelated objects such as the small portrait head at the
lower right and the leaf forms near Picasso’s temple make this highly
detailed portrait of the Spanish artist quite suitable for inclusion in
the Surrealistic oeuvre of Dali’s late career. This work is signed by the
artist and numbered 141/200.
