A message from
the president of the Alumni Association

One of the Alumni Executive Council’s 2002 objectives has been to increase the awareness of the Alumni Trust Fund and appropriate the income from the approximately $800,000 housed within the College endowment funds. The expectation was that the income from this Fund, started modestly in the 1960s, would be used to underwrite projects and activities consistent with the mission of our Association. I am pleased to report that this objective has been accomplished.

There is now a mechanism in place that allows for proposals to be submitted to your Executive Council for review and approval. In the past few months, two requests for financial grants have been approved. Your Alumni Association has underwritten the cost of ordering and placing championship team banners in Memorial Hall. This grant was made in honor of Karl Peckmann, class of 1954, who recently passed away. Karl devoted countless energies to Muhlenberg College through his involvement with the Alumni Association and the Board of Trustees.

A second grant was awarded to two students, both active campus leaders, who were selected to attend a college leadership conference in San Diego. Alumni funds helped to defray the cost of the trip and also served to create an awareness of our Association and its value among our undergraduates.

Of our approximately 15,000 alumni, roughly 1,100 or about 7 percent have contributed the one-time lifetime membership gift of $150 ($175 per couple). This Trust Fund grows through appreciation of the investment portfolio and membership gifts we receive. As the monies grow, we will be even better able to advance our objectives of helpfulness to the Muhlenberg community, benefiting both alumni and undergraduates.
