| Dr. Holmes E. Miller joined the department in 1991. He has a B.S. in Industrial Engineering, and a M.S. and a Ph.D. in Management Science, all from Northwestern University. His dissertation focused on personnel scheduling and allocation in health systems. He currently teaches courses in the areas of operations management, management science, electronic commerce, and information systems. He also teaches courses in these areas in Muhlenberg’s Accelerated Degree Program. Prior to coming to Muhlenberg, Dr. Miller spent fifteen years in the business world, working for Chase Manhattan Bank and for the Union Carbide Corporation. At Chase, he focused on operations risk management and information systems management, and at Union Carbide he was a member of a management science consulting group in the Chemicals and Plastics Division. He also was on the faculty of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Prior to receiving his Ph.D., he worked in the steel industry, the railroad industry, and in management consulting. His current research interests include managing risk in manufacturing and service environments, both in terms of applying analytical methods to arrive at more informed and better decisions, and in developing organizational methodologies to implement risk management programs. He also is interested in information quality, simulation modeling, and the role of the customer as regards providing products and services. While at Muhlenberg, he has published fifty papers in journals, as book chapters, and in conference proceedings. Dr. Miller is a member of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS), and of the Decision Sciences Institute.
