The Curriculum in Entrepreneurial Studies
Students may choose Entrepreneurial Studies as a major or minor within the Department of Business and Accounting. The four courses have been integrated with the core courses of a Business major to assure a complete and balanced curriculum for the graduate. Perhaps most interestingly and appropriately, a number of students combine a major or minor in Entrepreneurial Studies with a major in another field, preparing themselves to apply their liberal arts education in a career field such as publishing (with an English major), Not-for-Profit Management (with a degree in Religion), laboratory or hospital management (with a Biology or Chemistry major), or Entertainment Management (with a Theatre Arts major).
The student is introduced to entrepreneurship through a course in Entrepreneurial Studies, which is designed to explore the process of business innovation and development. Class discussions, text readings, and examinations of business successes and failures explore the creative process, planning, risk analysis, and issues of marketing, management, and finance. Students work in teams to develop a model business plan for a real potential business venture. Upon completion of this introductory course, students move into the Small Business Management course, which simulates managing and growing a small, entrepreneurial company. The student may then opt to either proceed to the Entrepreneurial Internship or the Small Business Institute programs. Finally, the student returns to the classroom for a capstone seminar in Entrepreneurial Policy and Strategy, which includes the application of the principles of Entrepreneurship to case studies, meetings with successful entrepreneurs to discuss strategy, and the planning and implementation of a job hunt, business launch, or graduate school strategy.
