Dr. James N. Marshall joined the Muhlenberg faculty in 1975 and was promoted to the rank of Professor in 1991. He earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering and a B.S. in Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Prior to his academic career, he worked for several years as a civil engineer-economist specializing in capital budgeting analysis. Dr. Marshall then received an M.B.A. in Finance from the University of  Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. His Ph.D. in economics and finance was earned at Lehigh University, where his dissertation focused on the pension funding problem. He is a recipient of the Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching. His teaching embraces a wide variety of courses in the economic and finance disciplines, ranging from the History of Economic Thought to Mathematics for Financial Analysis. His seminars have addressed topics such as poverty in America and the economic history of the United States in the 1920s and 1930s. Dr. Marshall has authored several essays, papers and reviews, as well as a book on the life and works of noted economist William J. Fellner. Recently he has written on the connection between the classical economics of Malthus and Ricardo and the social thought that inspired the Victorian industrial novel. He is advisor to Muhlenberg’s Alpha Eta chapter of Omicron Delta Epsilon, the international honors society in economics. Each year he leads a group of Muhlenberg students to a regional Omicron Delta Epsilon economics conference to present papers and serve as discussants. Dr. Marshall also serves as Co-Director of the College’s Political Economy major.
