Our Mission Statement
The Chemistry Department provides a
foundation for students who have a wide variety of career
goals in the sciences and allied health fields.
Therefore, we design the introductory general chemistry,
and the second-year organic chemistry courses to fulfill
the needs of chemistry, biochemistry, biology, and other
majors. We maintain a well-balanced curriculum that is
rigorous, includes all the major subdisciplines
(analytical chemistry, biochemistry, environmental,
inorganic, organic and physical chemistry), and offers a
wide variety of specialized upper-level courses. We
encourage scientific inquiry in the classroom and
laboratory by proffering questions that require hands-on
experiences with modern scientific equipment, and also
challenge students to think and write critically about
chemical principles. We encourage students to participate
in collaborative research with faculty during the academic
year and the summer session. Finally, we maintain
American Chemical Society certification in both chemistry
and biochemistry, and we support majors seeking
Pennsylvania teacher certification in chemistry and
environmental science.
