Dr. Ingersoll pursues several research interests in the area of analytical chemistry and instrumentation. Recent work aims to investigate flavonoids (antioxidants with known health benefits) binding to model proteins using fluorescence spectroscopy, and to develop automated analytical sample preparation techniques using robotic workstations and liquid handlers. She also collaborates with an interdisciplinary team of scientists at Muhlenberg that uses molecular biology, field studies, mathematics and analytical chemistry to study ecological questions. Specifically, Dr. Ingersoll and her students develop and implement methods for the extraction and analysis of secondary metabolites in plants (e.g., phenolic compounds) using liquid and gas chromatography as well as spectroscopic techniques, to better understand the role of defense chemistry in plant-herbivore interactions.
