Ironton Elementary School

Ironton Elementary School consistently hosts students from Muhlenberg College’s pre-service program. The fifth grade team has effectively implemented several thematic units such as the Celebration of Ironton’s 75th Anniversary in 1999, a Millennium Project in which students shared reports with Parkland High School gifted students, a Native North American Cultures unit, and a wax museum.

During the spring semester the team frequently integrates literature and social studies in a Civil War unit. Past units include “Across Five Aprils”, “The Ghost Cadet” and “Passport to Colonial Faces and Places”. All units include community involvement such as oral interviews and guest speakers as well as student projects and power-point presentation displays. The thematic unit for the team for 2007-2008 was “Poetry Adventuires”.
