Dr. Birgel teaches many of the courses offered by the German Program: German language courses, Masterpieces of German Literatur
e I & II, German Civilization, German Cinema, German Prose, and Readings in German Drama for theater majors. Within the college's new film studies program, he teaches German Cinema and The Western Film, and he is preparing a new course on World Cinema.

Dr. Birgel's
present research interests include German film history, cinematic adaptations of literary works, and the interrelationship between history and film. Together with Professor Klaus Phillips of Hollins University, he recently edited a collection of essays on the German filmmaker and author Doris Dörrie. Dr. Birgel is currently pursuing research on East German feature films about Native Americans and on the cinema of the Third Reich.

Albert Kipa is Muhlenberg's first Professor Laureate and former Head of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (1989-1993; 1997-2004). He also serves as Saeger Professor of Comparative Literature and teaches courses devoted to German, Russian, and "world" literature. He specializes in Germano-Slavic literary and cultural relations and is the author or co-author of studies and book reviews in his field. He has been the recipient of Fulbright, NEH and IREX grants, as well as Goethe Institute/AATG and Pennsylvania Department of Education merit awards. From 1980 to 1982 he served on a National Advisory Council to the U.S. Department of Education. Currently he serves as campus representative for the Fulbright program, is a vice-president of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts & Sciences in the U.S. and a Fellow of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine.

After teaching for ten years at Lafayette College in Easton, PA, Ms. Reeder, a native of Germany, joined Muhlenberg College in the fall of 2002. Aside from teaching first and second year German, she developed self-paced programs for students and a course on scientific reading. At Muhlenberg she will primarily be teaching language courses. Ms. Reeder has also done numerous translations, from court papers to a treatise on light refraction, advertisements and prose. When at home she likes to listen to classical music and enjoys gardening.
