Students interested in German have two options:

• A major in German Language and Literature
• A major or minor in German Studies.

Students majoring in German Language and Literature must successfully complete German 204 and any previous language courses with an average of at least 2.0 or demonstrate an equivalent command of the language.  Majors take nine courses beyond German 204, including Conversation and Composition, Advanced Conversation and Composition (native speakers may be exempted), Introduction to German Literature, Masterpieces of German Literature I or II, German Cinema, German Civilization, one of the German genre courses (prose, lyric poetry or drama) plus two additional courses from the program offerings.  All majors in German Language and Literature must maintain an average of at least 2.0 in all work done in the major.  Normally, the German Civilization course will fulfill the Collegeâs second writing intensive course requirement.  The major track in German Language and Literature should be selected by students seeking teacher certification in German.  This option requires an average of at least 3.0 in all work done in the major.
