Professors, students, and parents gathered on Sunday 15 February
to celebrate the initiation of new members to the Foreign Language
Honors Societies with chapters at the College. Current Phi Sigma
Iota members Jessie Bergstrom, Catina Crismale, Jennifer Greene,
Erin Koontz, Kristie Orlando, and Mary Papiernik assisted Dr.
Erika M. Sutherland to update the initiation program and plan
the ceremony. The evening began with a lovely spread of appetizers
and desserts but soon moved on to the main event. Dr. Sutherland
introduced the speaker, Fulbright Scholar and 2001 Muhlenberg
graduate Kathryn McCleary. In her keynote speech, Ms. McCleary
shared her experiences and insight about combining academic interests.
Her dual course of study at Muhlenberg --in history and Spanish--
at Muhlenberg and Fulbright research in Madrid on the cultural
contexts of domestic violence give testimonial to the power of
a good combination! Following the presentation, Department Chair
Dr. Kipa welcomed all in attendance and began the initiation
ceremony. Five German Studies students, one Russian Studies student,
two students in French, and eighteen in Spanish were inducted
into their respective honor societies. Congratulations to all!
