The Physics of Music

Background

Why the Physics of Music?

Like many other institutions, Muhlenberg College has a natural science requirement as part of its liberal arts curriculum. The College had courses in the Chemistry of Art and the Biology of Movement. We wanted to design a complementary course, the Physics of Music, which would provide a positive learning experience for music students studying science. Dr. Follet is a music theorist who has studied acoustics and electronic music, and Dr. Flood is a physicist who is also a violist. Collaborating on this course was an obvious choice. On this website you will find information about the team-teaching experience, course materials, and how to contact us. You will also see pictures of our students at work with the physical materials of sound.
