Dr. Ted Conner
Brief Biography


Dr. Ted Conner is an Assistant Professor of Music at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. As the Music Department's musicologist, he teaches courses in music history, World Music, a first-year seminar, ensembles (the Muhlenberg Collegium Musicum and Jazz Improvisation Ensemble), and studio instruction (Jazz guitar, recorder and viola da gamba).

Dr. Conner is the Chair of the Wescoe School Academic Policy and Curriculum Committee at Muhlenberg. He is also a member of the Faculty Center for Teaching. An organization committed to excellence in teaching, the FCT organizes workshops on pedagogy, runs the first-year faculty orientation, provides grant for the development of innovative teaching and a variety of other activities. Dr. Conner advises music majors and minors and is the Music Department’s Graduate Programs Advisor.

Dr. Conner is a professional Jazz guitarist and viola da gamba player. His jazz group, The Ted Conner Quartet--guitar, bass, drums, alto sax--performs regularly with recent concerts at The Touchstone Theatre and Muhlenberg College. Dr. Conner also performs on viola da gamba with several early music groups including the Wincoma Consort and the Muhlenberg Collegium Musicum.

Dr. Conner is an active scholar. Recent paper presentations include “Giuseppe Verdi’s Otello and Stiffelio: A Study of Similarity and Difference,” for the Lehigh Valley Institute of Italian Culture Lecture Series and “The Groundbreaking Treatise of Christopher Simpson" for a meeting of the American Musicological Society/New England Chapter and “Musical-Rhetorical Gestures in the Fantasias of Henry Purcell at a meeting of the Viola da Gamba Society of America/Philadelphia Chapter. Recent publications by Dr. Conner include “The Groundbreaking Treatise of Christopher Simpson” in The Journal of the Viola da Gamba Society of America and “Cherubino Rediscovered: Text, Music and Narrative in Mozart’s Trio” in Theory and Practice. His article, "Musical-Rhetorical Gestures in the Fantasias of Henry Purcell will be published this Spring in The Journal of the Viola da Gamba Society of America. Dr. Conner is a member of the American Musicological Society, the College Music Society, and the Viola da Gamba Society of America.
