Application Process
The Application
A centralized application
service is used at most health professions schools.
The necessary information is gathered in a standardized
format and sent to the schools you indicate.
Standardized test scores are also sent to the application
service. A fee is charged for this service.
Evaluation Letters
Letters of evaluation are
required of applicants applying to health professions
schools. Applicants are required to submit an
evaluation letter from a pre-health professions advisor and
faculty members who are familiar with the student.
Admissions committees are interested in a vast array of
criteria that will determine whether or not an applicant is
suitable for a career in the health professions.
Academics is obviously at the top of this criteria, but they
also look at motivation, leadership and integrity, just to
name a few.
The Aptitude Test
All applicants are required
to take a specific aptitude test. The test is
determined by the profession the applicant is applying to.
The test will help determine the probability the applicant
will have in that field. It is extremely important to
prepare for these tests all throughout college.
The Personal Statement
A personal essay is required
for admissions to a Health Professions school. It should include
information that will enable the admissions committee to get
a good idea of the person you are. Collect your
thoughts and ideas that you would like to write about.
This should be an ongoing process. Explain to the
admissions committee what will make you a better health care
professional, including your strengths and weaknesses.
The essay should be
grammatically correct with no misspellings. You want
to portray a professional impression to the committee.
The Interview
An interview is attained only
if you are at the top of the applicant group.
Different schools offer interviews for different reasons.
One school may offer an interview to students who meet a
certain numeric criteria, while another school may use the
evaluation letters as their criteria. Each school is
unique.
The interviewee should treat
the interview with professionalism. The Career Center
can help prepare the student for this. They can provide
guidelines and schedule a mock interview. The applicant
wants to be prepared for any situation that might arise
during the interview.
