Career Planning

--A few thoughts from the director--

I doubt that there can be too much left to say about choosing your undergraduate school; between high school guidance counselors, college admission officers, parents, consultants, friends and all the guidebooks on the market, you’ve heard it all.

What sets Muhlenberg College apart is the people who work here and the students who attend.

The students who choose Muhlenberg College because of its health professions program typically do so because they’ve heard from someone that it has a good reputation for assisting students who want to go on to graduate professional school in the health sciences. This is true.

It’s much more than just what percentage of students go on to medical, dental or veterinary school; it’s about guidance and making good, solid choices.

Students are told from the time they come to campus that they need to date the profession that they’re targeting. That means extensive shadowing opportunities, internships, possibly research, and lots of engaging conversations with individuals currently performing in the capacity that a student sees himself or herself in after graduation.

With an extensive alumni base of health care professionals, Muhlenberg’s network stretches far and wide. Cooperative programming with the Career Center and Alumni Relations affords the pre-health student many prospects to query current health care professionals.

With a changing world before us, it is no doubt that fields such as Public Health, PT, OT, PA, Dentistry, Veterinary, Podiatry and Optometry are gaining in popularity. These are all health professional careers chosen by Muhlenberg students.

Although the majority of students entering Muhlenberg’s health professions program do so as traditional pre-med students, many will have changed their pathway by graduation. This is often due to what the student has learned about the profession that he/she didn’t know as a first year student. This is what an undergraduate education is supposed to do – allow one personal growth and choice.

Should you decide to matriculate at Muhlenberg College you’ll be encouraged to keep an open mind, examine many career paths and decide after much guidance, which profession is the best fit for your strengths.

Please come for a visit and see for yourself.
