--Cooperative Program--
Muhlenberg College, Lehigh Valley Hospital and Drexel University College of Medicine have established a Scholars-Articulation Program designed to link the undergraduate and medical school education of its participants. Students admitted to the program are guaranteed admission to Drexel University College of Medicine upon meeting the Muhlenberg degree requirements, attaining the required grade point average (3.5 CUM/3.5 Science), scoring a minimum of
10 on the Biological and Physical Science section and a
9 on the Verbal section of the Medical College Admission Test, and completing the scholar requirements as set forth by the three institutions.
Students in the program will have the opportunity to participate in research studies and other educational enrichment experiences at Lehigh Valley Hospital and Drexel University College of Medicine during their undergraduate years at Muhlenberg.WHO CAN BE ADMITTED? Six students per class can be admitted to this program. If the program is not fully enrolled at the point of freshman admission, students can apply after their first year at Muhlenberg. Application for admission to the program is offered to students who present a first-year CUM of 3.5 or greater and have the requisite SAT scores. Transfer students from another institution into Muhlenberg are not eligible for this program. The program typically draws approximately 100 applicants for the six places available. Students interested in this Scholars Program should send a letter with their application for admission indicating their interest and the reasons for that interest. A selection committee made up of representatives from Muhlenberg, Drexel University College of Medicine and Lehigh Valley Hospital will review applications in mid-January and select 15 sets of credentials for further review by the Medical School Admissions Committee. Drexel University College of Medicine will then contact finalists for an interview at the medical school before decisions are finalized. All decisions will be communicated to students before the May 1 National Candidate's Reply Date. Because the program draws applications from so many well-qualified students; it is very possible that a student not admitted to the Scholars 4-4 Program will be offered admission to Muhlenberg College. Applicants to this program must have a combined SAT score of not less than 1270 with no subset less than 560. Successful candidates typically have combined SAT scores of 1300 or greater and rank in the top five percent of their high school class. In addition, they usually will have taken some honors and/or Advanced Placement course work during their high school career. It is required that all candidates for the program interview at Muhlenberg by January 1 of their senior year.
Final Notes:
Because the Selection Committee begins its work in mid-January, applicants for this program should have their application to Muhlenberg complete by January 1. In addition, because the final decision-making process moves relatively quickly once it is in motion, students should be prepared to make every effort to get to Drexel University College of Medicine for their finalist interview on the day and time suggested by the medical school's Admissions Committee. This is very important in keeping the process moving forward in the spring so that all decisions can be finalized before May 1. Because of Muhlenberg's long and strong tradition in the sciences and pre-medicine, many qualified students who may not be successful in gaining admission to this Scholars Program will still be excellent candidates for a competitive pre-health program at Muhlenberg. Many solid relationships exist with many fine medical schools throughout the country, and the College has an enviable track record with regard to student placement in professional schools of medicine, dentistry, podiatry, optometry, and veterinary medicine.
