Chestnut Hill Hospital Pre-Med Program

The purpose of the Chestnut Hill Hospital Pre-Med Program is to provide a volunteer opportunity for qualified college students to observe
the practice of medicine within a hospital setting. Created in 1969, for ten years the program was administered jointly with Abington Hospital.
In the early days the students received their clinical experiences at Chestnut Hill Hospital and their theory at Abington Hospital. In 1979 the
program became independent and functioned solely out of Chestnut Hill Hospital. Currently the program is administered by Volunteer Services.
Four students are selected for this internship which runs from the last week of June to the first week of August.

The following criteria are used for selecting a Pre-Med candidate. It is mandatory that the sophomore year of college be completed with a strong
emphasis placed on Biology, Human Physiology, Anatomy and other related sciences. Cumulative grade scores above 3.3 are required. A personal
interview is scheduled with the Coordinator of Volunteer Services to explore interest in this Pre-Med Program and medicine as a career. The applicant
must submit an official transcript and two letters of recommendation. The application process must be completed by February 1, although they
recommend interested students to complete the application and schedule an interview during the December/January break.  Notification is made
by April 1.

The program encompasses five basic areas. Weekly, one hour “Round Table Discussions” are scheduled. Six doctors from different medical fields are
invited to participate in these informal discussions. It is an opportunity for the students to explore with the doctor a particular field of medicine, the
new technologies, treatment and equipment pertinent to that discipline.

Each student is scheduled for a four-hour shift and /or four times per week in the Emergency Department.

With the surgeon’s permission the Pre-Med volunteer is able to observe in the Operating Room. Most students observe a minimum of fifteen procedures.

Additionally there are opportunities to make rounds with physicians, to shadow Internal Medicine and Family Practice residents and to observe hours in
the Family Practice Unit, Senior Behavioral Unit, Radiology, Antenatal Unit and Chestnut Hill Pediatrics private practice.

Each student should consult with the pre-health advisor about the paperwork involved in obtaining academic credit for this program.  If you have further
questions, please call 215-248-8289 or email Mary Catherine Dabrowski at MaryCatherine_Dabrowski@chs.net
