PUT ON A HAPPY FACE!
Charles Strouse celebrates the release of his Broadway memoir on October 29th at 4 pm in the Baker Theatre of the Trexler Pavilion for Theatre & Dance, Muhlenberg College. (Admission is free!)
On June 7, 2008 Charles Strouse turned 80, but as the song goes, he’s “got a lotta livin’ to do.” Strouse has plenty of new projects on the horizon including revivals of some of his popular favorites, concert performances, and the release of an autobiography.
Strouse, a long-standing member of the Songwriters' Hall of Fame and The Theatre Hall of Fame, is one of America's most successful musical theatre composers. His first Tony Award-winning Broadway musical was Bye Bye Birdie (1960), producing hit songs including "Put on a Happy Face," "A Lot of Livin' to Do" and "Kids." He also won Tony Awards for Applause (1970) and Annie (1977). Strouse's film scores include Bonnie & Clyde (1967), for which he received a Grammy nomination for Best Original Film Score. The Muhlenberg College experience offers a direct learning partnership among faculty and students in the classroom, the laboratory and the performance studio. Students at Muhlenberg are more than nurtured to succeed. They are encouraged to grow and to take risks. Muhlenberg offers the opportunity to foster the most important goal of the liberal arts education - the education of the whole person.
Theatre
and Dance programs at Muhlenberg College are uniquely a cultural resource for the college,
an entertainment center for the campus, and a community
arts center that is recognized by thousands of Lehigh
Valley audiences.
We
have developed a unique approach to theatre and dance
education that combines exciting creative
experiences with rigorous professional standards.
Our students are challenged as artists in the studio
and classroom, working closely with faculty and nationally
recognized guest artists to achieve both a conceptual
understanding and practical working knowledge of the
arts and the professions. We encourage each student
to individualize his or her education to fulfill personal
creative and intellectual goals.
Muhlenberg Summer Music Theatre produces four full-scale musicals with professional guest artists. Open auditions are held in February of each year, and Muhlenberg theatre and dance students are encouraged to participate in this regional theatre company as part of their educational experience. Housing is provided.
