Upcoming for Fall:
(Click calendar for full view!)

This fall we have an exciting roster of events. In honor of the Anthony Tudor’s 100th Birthday we join the world-wide celebration of one of the greatest choreographers of the Twentieth Century. American Ballet Theatre Principal, Amanda McKerrow, will restage Tudor ballet Continuo during a one-week residency in November. The ballet will be performed in our Master Choreographers concert in February. We are also excited to welcome Zane Booker, another international artist to our roster of guests choreographing for this concert. Zane has been a member of the White Oak Project, Ballet de Monte Carlo, Netherlands Dance Theatre and Philadanco. Our own Charles Anderson, Corrie Cowart, and Shelley Oliver will also be making works for this concert. Save the Date: February 7 - 9.

In conjunction with the Center for Ethics program “Globalization From Above and Below,” the Muhlenberg Dance Association will present the film “Movement (R)evolution Africa” and a panel discussion with faculty and guest artist to follow. The film recently premiered at the Dance on Camera Festival at Lincoln Center and was nominated for the Jury Prize. Designed to expand and invigorate contemporary dance by illuminating critical innovations of African artists, the film has been called “a knockout” by the Village Voice (Jan 2007).

Student News:
Meagan Bruskewicz ’08 was complimented for her “embodiment of emotion” and “churchly effect” in Jennifer Dunning’s New York Times review of How Long Brethren? on July 19th. The piece was originally choreographed by Helen Tamiris and reconstructed by Dianne McIntyre for the American Dance Festival, and Meagan was a featured soloist in it. Brandon Girouard ’08 and Samantha Jonson ’09 are currently dancing within Charles O. Anderson’s company in TAR. Chris Shepard ‘07 and Kate Thompson ‘07 earned top honors for their choreography at the American College Dance Festival Northeast Conference. A total of 27 schools participated. Only 10 of the 41 pieces were deemed excellent by the adjudicators and performed again as part of the conference’s gala concert. Muhlenberg was the only school to have both submitted works selected for the gala. Shepard majored in theatre and minored in dance and English, while Thompson double majored in dance and psychology. Both of them performed in their works as well as choreographing them: Kate in a solo and Chris in a duet with senior Robert J. Wagner.

Faculty Update:
This year, we are excited to welcome Sarah Carlson to the Dance Department! Sarah danced professionally in NYC with numerous companies including Alexandra Beller/Dances, Brian Brooks Moving Company, Clare Byrne Dance, Paul Mosley Dance and the Metropolitan Opera Ballet. Sarah received a BA in French and European Studies from Connecticut College and an MFA in Dance from the University of Washington. As an independent choreographer, her own work has been presented across the nation. Sarah enjoys being a contributing dance writer for Offoffoff.com, Danceinsider.com and Gay City News. In 2005-6, she was a full-time Visiting Guest Artist at the University of Southern Mississippi. Most recently, she completed a Fulbright Grant studying Vodou ritual dance in Benin, Africa, furthering an on-going inquiry into sacred dance forms.

Charles O. Anderson has been selected as 2007 Pew Fellow, a $50,000 Fellowship given to artists considered to be outstanding in their field. His work TAR, a multi-media evening length dance work inspired by the “Wonderful Tar Baby Story”, premieres at the Philadelphia Live Arts Festival September 5-8. Students and the community enjoyed a preview showing of this and other works at dtX’s concert at the Theater Outlet in April. Charles also gave a presentation at the Cultural Studies Now conference at the University of East London (U.K.) July 19-22.

Corrie Franz Cowart continues to serve on the prescreening committee for the Dance Film Association’s annual Dance on Camera Festival at Lincoln Center. Corrie also began the first of four modules of study in pursuit of her certification in Laban Movement Analysis. She looks forward to utilizing this work to help dance students become more efficient and expressive and to help theatre students access a broader arsenal in their physical performances. In April, her concert (Co-Art Dance Company) was well received by students and the community. Corrie has also been doing a lot of traveling this year!

Karen Dearborn choroegraphed Fiddler on the Roof for the Muhlenberg Summer Theatre, attended three days of American College Dance Festival board meetings in NYC, and wrote a book review for the Theatre Journal.

This July, Shelley Oliver taught and performed at the St. Louis Tap Festival. Her company, the Shelley Oliver Tap Dancers, toured in Ohio and Virginia. Fall performances will include West Virginia, Rose Lehrman Arts Center in Harrisburg, and Cape Charles, Virginia.
