1. What is the energy competition?

The “Watts Your Bergtricity? 2010 Dorm Energy Competition” is an energy reduction competition between the fifteen major campus dormitories.  Dorms will compete over the 2-week period to gain points and the top scoring dorm will win an ice cream party with Dean GREEN and various musical performers. 

Dorms can obtain points in two ways:

1. Prior to the start of the competition we calculated the average daily energy usage for each dorm.  Each day during the competition we will post each dorm’s total energy usage (in kilowatts) for the previous day.  If your dorm’s total energy usage for that day is below your average energy usage, you earn points.  On the dorm % change graph, this will be indicated by a green dot.  If your dorm’s total energy usage for that day is above your average energy usage, you lose points.  This will be indicated by a red dot.   
2. Dorms will receive bonus points for having their residents attend any of the Dorm Competition events being held during the 2-week competition (see schedule of events). 

How are points calculated?

1. Energy Reduction Points: Points will be awarded based on your dorm’s % change from the baseline average energy consumption.  The baseline average was calculated from the dorm’s average energy usage between 4/12/10 and 4/23/09.  For example, if on Monday your dorm’s energy usage decreases by 0.2% your dorm will receive 200 points (0.2% x 100).  However, if your dorm’s energy usage for Monday increases by 0.2% your dorm will lose 200 points (yes, you can have a negative score…this is bad)


2. Because our goal is to encourage energy conservation, event points will be weighted less.  But this is a chance for your dorm to make up lost points after a high energy use day.  Each student attending a Dorm Competition sponsored event will receive 10 points for their dorm.   
   

*Also, these “bonus” event points will be used as a tie-breaker in the event of a tie at the end of the competition.  The dorm with more bonus point wins*
