Who was
Dr. Carl F. Odhner?
Carl F. Odhner (1928-1998)
was stricken with polio at the age of nine weeks.
He entered Good Shepherd Home as a patient at the
age of fourteen and went on to be graduated from
Allen High as a 'homebound' student never setting a
wheel in the building. He went on to receive a
bachelor's degree from the Academy of the New
Church, 'because it just happened to have an
accessible side entrance and an internal elevator.'
Three years later, in 1960, Odhner drove himself to
Southern Illinois University where he earned a
Master's Degree in rehabilitation counseling.
Returning to Allentown, he organized and served as
the Director of Good Shepherd Vocational Services
and was one of the founders of Operation Overcome
of the Lehigh Valley and the Pennsylvania Coalition
of Citizens with Disabilities. In 1990 he served as
the first Executive Director of the Lehigh Valley
Center for Independent Living. Odhner received an
honorary doctorate from Muhlenberg College in 1991.
Carl Odhner's lifelong advocacy for the handicapped
and his vision of inclusive communities are being
remembered today through the establishment of the
Disabilities Resources collection. |
