WorldCat

WorldCat is the world's largest database of library records. Use this to search practically every library in the U.S. for books on your topic. WorldCat shows which libraries hold a particular book, and you can request items from those libraries. (Use the ILL button in WorldCat to request books.) ILL can take between 10 - 14 days, so plan ahead. Optimally, for rapid delivery, request books from E-Z Borrow.

Specialized Databases

AGRICOLA
This is a bibliographic database created by the National Agricultural Library. The database covers materials in all formats from as early as the 15th century. The resources encompass all aspects of agriculture and allied disciplines.

Anthropology Plus
The major database in anthropology. Excellent source for cultural and indigenous issues.

Business Source Elite
An excellent source for business information as published in domestic and international business and trade journals. The latter has a more pronounced international focus.

Clase Periodica
Contains indexing for scholarly journals published in Latin America. These journals cover all subjects, and many articles are in Spanish.

Contemporary Women's Issues (CWI)
Provides indexing to global information on women in over 150 countries. Indexes books, journals, newsletters, research reports from non-profit groups, government and international agencies, and fact sheets.

Historical Abstracts
Try Historical Abstracts for journal articles on topics related to world history. Not full text. Extensive in coverage.

GEOBASE
Covers books, journals, monographs, conference proceedings, and reports on topics such as geography, geology, ecology, and the environment from 1980 to the present.

General Science and Biological & Agricultural Index
Both index scholarly and popular periodicals which have information on biology and agriculture plus many more scientific topics.

PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service)
Top source for international relations, develpment, and political science resources. Indexes select articles, books, conference proceedings, government documents, statistical directories, 1972 to present.

PubMed
This database searches Medline which is an index of medical journals sponsored by the National Library of Medicine dating back to 1950s.

Sociological Abstracts (SocAbs)
The main indexing source for journal articles in Sociology. SocAbs covers many issues relating to development and society in Central America.

General / Interdisciplinary Databases

Academic Search Premier
Includes the full text of about 4,000 scholary and popular journals. Limit to "peer reviewed" to find only scholarly articles.

Google Scholar
http://scholar.google.com/
The scholarly literature arm of Google. Remember to always check the library catalog for the items you find in Google Scholar and use Interlibrary Loan to get items from other libraries; do not pay unnecessarily for items via the publishers' websites.

IngentaConnect
A table of contents service for over 30,400 popular and scholarly periodicals since 1988.

JSTOR
Provides a full-text collection of complete backfiles of scholarly journals in many disciplines such as biological sciences, botany, business, economics, history, and Latin American studies. Many of the journals date back to the 1800s.

Lexis Nexis Academic Universe
Indexes and provides full-text of major national and international newspapers, newswires, select journals and magazines, and legal publications. Special section for country information.

OmniFile (WilsonWeb)
Multi-disciplinary database providing the complete content–indexing, abstracts, and full text–from six of Wilson's full-text databases. Includes some sociology and biology journals.


GETTING THE ARTICLES

  1. When searching for articles, you may find the full-text of an article linked in the database.

  2. If not, you need to search the Trexler Library Catalog to see if we own the journal in which the article is published.
    • Most databases have a Get It! link embedded. Click the link to check our holdings.
    • Otherwise, search the catalog by journal title. Verify that we have online, print, or microform access to the year/volume you need.
  3. If we do not own the journal you need, request the article via Interlibrary Loan.
    • Some databases have a Request on Interlibrary Loan link embedded. Click the link to fill out the form. Click Submit.
    • Otherwise, use the Interlibrary Loan Journal Article Request Form (Library Homepage  --  ILL (in the Services & Forms box)  --  Articles request form). Fill out the form with as much information as possible. Ask for help, if you have questions.
