Fall 2004

These guides have been prepared by the Trexler Library Staff in support of Muhlenberg College's Center for Ethics Fall 2004 programming on the theme of Disease: Representation, Research, and Rights, and they are meant to be a starting point for students and faculty in their study of disease. Resources covered include library databases, reference materials, titles from the main collection, and websites.   • Responding to Disability and Illness
    Resources on the topic of disability and illness--broadly defined, in preparation for the Diane Prince Herndl program: "Hate and the Uncanny Body: Treating ‘Rational Fear' with Feminist Ethics; Or, the Strange Cases of Nike and the Supreme Court" (7 September).

  • Breast Cancer
    A guide to library resources on breast cancer, in support of the Martin Art Gallery show "Knowing Stephanie: Images of Breast Cancer" by Charlee Brodsky (8 September-31 October) and for the National Lee Denim Day for Breast Cancer Awareness (8 October).

  • Global AIDS, TB and Malaria
    Library resources relating to Paul Zeitz's lecture entitled: "Closing the Global Equity Gap: Scaling Up Programs to Combat AIDS, TB, and Malaria in the Global South" (14 September).

  • Obesity and Gender
    Selected library resources for Dr. Sander Gilman's lecture on "Fat Boys: The Unknown Story of Men and Fat" (22 September)
  • Deafness
    This library resource guide on deafness is designed to support the showing of Josh Aronson's documentary film "Sound and Fury" (28 September).
  • Mass Media and Health
    These resources are prepared for Dr. Nancy Signorielli's presentation relating to mass media's representation of health issues (5 October).

  • New Medicines and Medical Discovery
    Library resources relating to Dr. Mark Plotkin's lecture: "Rainforest Conservation and the Search for New Jungle Medicines" (26 October).

  • Disability Studies
    Resources on disability studies in preperation for Disabilities Awareness Week (1-5 November).

  • The Business of Healthcare in Pennsylvania
    A guide to selected library resources on medical liablity, healthcare accessibility, physician responsibilities and patient rights in the Pennsylvania health care system. The related pannel discussion is on 9 November.
