Journal Articles
Follow the path: Finding Articles--Databases & Indexes to search for journal articles. The suggested databases below can be found either on the alphabetical list or under the Social Sciences category.
Use the same basic strategy to locate journal articles that you used to find books. Start with a keyword search. Find at least one, but hopefully several articles that are exactly what you are looking for. Use the blue subject heading links or go back and do a subject search for the same ideas using the terms that the database or index prefers. Now, brainstorm. What other words could be used to describe the same topic or ideas? Use the same strategy to search those terms also to make sure you are finding the maximum amount of information.
Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO)
Scholarly source for theory and research in international affairs since 1991. Includes working papers, conference proceedings, books, journals, policy briefs, maps and country data.Lexis Nexis Academic
Indexes and provides full-text of major newspapers, nationally and internationally (English Language editions only). Also includes newswires, and select journals and magazines. Updated daily. coverage from as early as 1980 to the present. Special section for country information.PAIS (Public Affairs Information Service)
Index to select articles, books, conference proceedings, government documents, statistical directories, 1972 to present. Especially useful for research on the environment, demographics, international relations, public administration.Social Science Abstracts
This database indexes journal articles from 1984 to present. It indexes a mixture of scholarly and popular articles in all areas of the social science, including political science and economics. This is a good place to find interdisciplinary topics.World News Connection (WNC)
This database provides access to current international news. The Reference Desk has the password to this database, so you must use it in the library.Once you identify the journal articles that you want to read, they may be found in several places. Articles published since 1990 are located on Level A near the Reference desk. They are organized on the shelves by the title of the journal that contains the article. Articles published in 1989 or earlier are located on Level C. They are also organized alphabetically by title. The back issues of some journal titles may also be found on microfiche or microfilm. Both are located in the Micromedia room on Level A and are arranged alphabetically by title.
Journal articles that are not owned by Trexler Library can be ordered by following the path to submit an Interlibrary Loan request. Remember to order materials early--it may take several weeks to receive the materials you need.
