Interlibrary Loan Policies

  1. How can I find out the status of my interlibrary loan requests?
    You can view the status of your interlibrary loan requests when you view your patron record.

    PLEASE NOTE: When your request arrives, we will send a message to your Muhlenberg College e-mail account.

  2. What is interlibrary loan?
    Interlibrary loan is a service which makes it possible for library materials not owned by Trexler Library to be obtained from other libraries or commercial document suppliers.

  3. Who may use interlibrary loan?
    All Muhlenberg students, faculty, staff,alumni (and also Clergy) are eligible to use the service. The interlibrary loan office is located on Level A of Trexler Library.

  4. Is there a limit to how many interlibrary loan requests a person may make?
    Yes, there is a limit of 60 interlibrary loan requests per semester. If more are needed, a professor's approval will be necessary.

  5. What types of materials are available through interlibrary loan?

    • Books
      These can be borrowed in their original form or in microform. The loan period is 3 to 4 weeks, depending on the policy of the lending library. In most cases, a book may be renewed for an additional 3 to 4 weeks.
    • Photocopies of Periodical Articles
      Photocopies of articles from journals that are not available from Trexler Library can be obtained.
    • ERIC Documents
      ERIC documents can be obtained free of charge from the State Library of Pennsylvania on microfiche and can be read or printed on microfiche reader-printers in the Micromedia Room on Level A.

  6. What types of materials are not available through interlibrary loan?

    • Dissertations and Theses
      Most American libraries will not lend original copies of dissertations. Many libraries will however lend photocopies or microforms of dissertations. Check at the interlibrary loan office for information on lending policies of specific institutions.
    • Rare Books, Manuscripts, Reference Materials, etc.
      Libraries generally do not lend rare books or manuscripts. It may be possible, however, to purchase a photocopy or microform copy. Check with the interlibrary loan office for specific cases.

  7. Whom do I call if there is a problem with a request?
    All interlibrary loan requests are handled by the Trexler Library Interlibrary Loan office. Call or e-mail the staff.

  8. How long will my request take?
    This table gives a general idea of how long it will take to fill your requests.
