Creating Durable Links
Trexler Library subscribes to databases that allow users to link the full text of articles in scholarly journals to electronic term papers, projects, and Blackboard course projects. Users do not need to obtain copyright permission to link to these texts because the library subscribes to the databases and enables "fair use" for academic users.
"Durable" links will last a long time (in theory). Because of the way vendors construct their links, it is not possible to create durable links to every index or database.
Because Trexler Library uses a "proxy re-write" method for authorizing access to proprietary, third-party databases for off-campus (or out-of-campus-network) users, durable links to certain databases must be edited in order to enable Muhlenberg users to use such links off-campus.
Note: This list represents the most-used databases.
Database: EBSCOhost (Academic Search Premier)
- Search EBSCOhost (or Academic Search Premier). Choose a full-text article, noted with the symbols
or
. Select the article title to display the full text on your screen.
- The "Persistent link" to the record will be displayed following the abstract of the article.
- You can cut-and-paste the link as given in the message into the document of your choice (be sure to add the usual anchor tags <a href=" [URL] "</a>). Here is an example:
<a href="http://search.ebscohost.com/direct.asp?an=9469562&db=aph">Bountiful Celtic Burials<;/a>
- Finally, you will have to add the following text in red in this example:
<a href="http://0- search.ebscohost.com.library.muhlenberg.edu /direct.asp?an=9469562&db=aph">Bountiful Celtic Burials</a>
- The formula to re-write these URLs is:
http://[ port number=0-][=zero-hyphen][target URL][.library.muhlenberg.edu ][=dot-library-dot-muhlenberg-dot-edu]/rest of the URL ...
Database: JSTOR
- Search JSTOR for your topic or document.
- The list of results will note a "stable URL" in each citation.
- Copy the "stable URL" and paste it into your document or web page. Here is an example:
Stable URL: http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0038-7134%28197407%2949%3A3%3C421%3ATROTEB%3E2.0.CO%3B2-3
- Insert the elements in red in this example into your stable URL:.
Stable URL: http://0- links.jstor.org.library.muhlenberg.edu /sici?sici=0038-7134%28197407%2949%3A3%3C421%3ATROTEB%3E2.0.CO%3B2-3
- The formula to re-write these URLs is:
http://[ port number=0-][=zero-hyphen][target URL][.library.muhlenberg.edu ][=dot-library-dot-muhlenberg-dot-edu]/rest of the URL ...
Database: ProQuest (Morning Call)
Database: Gale/Infotrac (Business & Company ASAP)
- Search the database for the document you wish to link to.
- When you have the full text on the screen, check to see if there is an "infomark" symbol. If so, highlight the URL in the:
- Address box in Internet Explorer and copy it (control/c).
- Location box in Netscape and copy it (control/c).
- Paste (control/v) the URL into your web page or document.
Database: Project MUSE
- Search MUSE for an article.
- Select the full text of the article you want.
- Highlight the URL:
- In the address box (Internet Explorer)
- In the location box (Netscape)
- Copy (control/c) the URL and paste it (control/v) into your document or web page.
Database: Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO)
- Search CIAO for an article, working paper or other material.
- CIAO will display a list of search results. Following the bibliographic information for each listed item CIAO will display a URL which is a durable link. Here is an example:
http://0-www.ciaonet.org.library.muhlenberg.edu:80/wps/nij01/nij01.pdf
- You can cut-and-paste the link as given in the message into the document of your choice (be sure to add the usual anchor tags <a href=" [URL] "</a>). Note that CIAO has already inserted the Muhlenberg-specific elements into each URL.
Database: Ingenta
- Formulating an Ingenta durable link is complex. Directions can be found on a separate Ingenta Instructions .pdf document.
