Pre-Orientation Programs for the Class of 2015
(Monday, August 22 - Thursday, August 25)
The following programs are available for Pre-Orientation 2011. These excursions are memorable experiences where you get to know other Muhlenberg first-year students in small group settings. Participants will meet new friends and contribute personal strengths in programs that are fun and educational. Each program is coordinated by a member of Muhlenberg’s faculty or staff and created to offer new students activities that are supportive learning opportunities in a fun and productive setting. You will receive full information about the programs and application procedures with your summer registration packet in May.
MUHLENBERG’S GOT TALENT!
FACULTY/STAFF LEADER: Cailin Pachter, Director, Career Center & Pre-Law Advisor, cpachter@muhlenberg.edu
STUDENT LEADER: Melanie Panosian ‘13
No, we don’t mean the ability to sing and dance – although it’s cool if you do. We are talking about discovering your top 5 “themes of talent” as measured by the Clifton Strengths Finder. Muhlenberg is involved in an initiative that helps students better understand their unique talents and transform them into strengths by acquiring skills and knowledge. This program will help you develop this understanding and explore how to use this information to be successful in college and in life. The strengths that you reveal can be applied to academics, relationships, your career and much more!
FEE: $200/Student
Maximum Number of First-Year Students: 10
TREE TOP ZIP LINES, ROCKETS & EGGS
FACULTY/STAFF LEADER: Merritt Jacob, Physics Lab Manager & Instructor, Physics Department, jacob@muhlenberg.edu
Student Leader: Andrew Nederlof ‘13
What do treetop zip lines, rockets and eggs have in common? PHYSICS! We will explore some basic physics concepts, such as impulse and momentum, kinematics and conservation of energy, by experiencing first hand activities that highlight these ideas. We will make a trip to the Pocono Mountain region and spend a day at Camelback Mountain’s Tree Top Adventure Course that features zip lines, suspended bridges, scramble nets, swinging logs and much more. Back on campus we will launch rockets and hold a protected egg drop contest. Informal workshops will be held to analyze the data and discuss the physics involved in each activity.
This program is designed for anyone with interest in physics, engineering and science in general. Students who enjoy the outdoors, are physically active, and possess some basic mathematical skills will benefit the most from this program. Tree Top Zip Line Course has a minimum height of 5’11” with arms fully extended and feet flat on the floor. A maximum weight limit of 260 lbs. is also listed.
FEE: $200
