This growing system (sold by Carolina Biological Supply Co., Burlington, NC) allows the students to grow a large number of plants in a minimal space. Each quad, with four cells, was used as one treatment or control group. This image shows the effects of 0.1% or 10% gibberellic acid on normal (not dwarf) plants.

The seeds easily adhere to the wet filter paper that is placed in the top of the petri dish. The covered petri dish is then placed, almost vertical, in the bottom of a 2 liter soda bottle, which is filled with water or an experimental solution like 0.1% gibberellin.
