Dr. Marion Smith's current research focuses on the preparation of new heterobimetallic porphyrin complexes. Zinc tetrapyridyl-porphyrin forms self-assembled complexes with metal salts such as copper chloride and cobalt (II) chloride. The complex with copper chloride has been characterized by elemental analysis including atomic absorption spectroscopy. Work is in progress to prepare a crystalline sample that would be suitable for X-ray analysis, and on the preparation and analysis of related compounds.
