Student Profiles
Current Students
Mike Baer will attend the University of Pennsylvania Medical School next year. His experiences at Muhlenberg have helped him achieve this and will continue to be utilized to further his goals. Mike became a model Muhlenberg student. Enjoying intellectual flexibility led him to a biochemistry major so he was able study the interaction between two disciplines. This intellectual curiosity also led Mike to be-coming a history minor so he could broaden his horizons and ask questions in other areas of study. In addition to his studies, Mike competed in the decathlon for the track team during his college career and is currently the captain. As a member of the Cardinal Keys Society, he was able to connect with and learn from alumni. He gives back to current Muhlenberg community as the Learning Assistant for Organic Chemistry.
Mike has progressed in his approach to academics. Starting out, he had a mindset that was content to be confined. Now, he enjoys independence and discussion based classes where he is able to exert more autonomy. The idea of being confused and working on complex problems now holds opportunity for Mike. This growth was brought about, no doubt, in part by his time spent Dr. Wightman’s lab researching questions concerning in genetics. These experiences have given Mike a foundation to pursue his goal of becoming a doctor and possibly doing research.
Melissa Ugelow is chemistry major and a cross country runner at Muhlenberg College. She began research on laser chemistry with Dr. Bruce Anderson her sophomore year, and made linear, hydrogen capped polyynes of differing lengths using graphite in an ethanol solution. The main objective was to increase yield and to try to selectively synthe-size polyynes of specific lengths. Her experience in the lab led her to take on other research opportuni-ties. During her junior year summer, Melissa attended the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at the University at Buffalo, New York. She worked with an analytical chemistry research group that as-sessed and characterized the sensing properties of porous silicon.
Although she is graduating Muhlenberg a semester early, Melissa will be continuing with her career in chemistry without a break. In the spring, she will be interning at NIST where she will live in Washington D.C. and take part in an analytical chemistry research project. She is currently applying to graduate school for next fall to get her PhD in analytical chemistry with environmental applications. Good luck Melissa!
