Elementary (K-6) Program
The elementary education certification program is built upon a foundation of field-based experiences and a full complement of special methods courses. The program contains a core of requirements in the area of general studies and a complement of courses in pedagogy and can be completed in conjunction with any major.
Required Cognate Courses
- One (1) composition/writing course (satisfied through the First -Year Seminar)
- Two (2) mathematics courses
- One (1) British or American Literature course
- One (1) biological science course
- One (1) physical science course
- One (1) American history course
- THR 190: Foundations of the Creative Arts

- PED 100: Foundations of Exercise Science & Wellness
- An environmental perspective*
- An economics perspective*
* This requirement is often met through required cognate courses in disciplines that emphasize this perspective (i.e., biological or physical science course for the environmental perspective; American history or geography course for the economics perspective).
