Creative Writing Minor: (6 Courses)

The Creative Writing Minor is directed and administered by the Chair of the English Department, and students are advised by full-time creative writing faculty. Students may major in English and minor in Creative Writing and are permitted to double-count specific courses toward fulfillment of the requirements in both programs.

Introductory Courses in Writing: Students must complete at least two courses, each one in a different genre:

     ENG 203 Nonfiction Writing

     ENG 207 Dramatic Writing

     ENG 201 Poetry & Fiction Writing
     ENG 240, 241 Nature of Narrative

     ENG 201 Poetry & Fiction Writing
     ENG 245, 246 Poetry & the Imaginative Process

200-level Special Topics and MILA courses in creative writing can sometimes also count, such as The Art of Creative Writing or Writing Identity Abroad.

Advanced Writing Courses: Students must complete at least two courses from the following list.

     COM 321 or 322 Writing for the Media
     ENG 303 Nonfiction Workshop
     ENG 305 Fiction Workshop
     ENG 307 Playwriting Workshop
     ENG 309 Poetry Workshop
     ENG 364 Screenwriting Workshop
     ENG 368 'Zines, DIY Publishing, & Literary Journals

300-level Special Topics in writing can sometimes also count, such as Writing in the Community, Writing Children's Literature, Multi-Genre Workshop.

Additional Course: Students must complete one additional course of their choice from Introductory or Advanced writing courses listed above.

Literature: Students must complete at least one 300-level or higher literature course offered in the English or Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Departments.

Living Writers and The Literary Marketplace can also count towards this requirement.
