Robert Croskey was born in Portland, Oregon in 1946. He grew up on a farm in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, near Vancouver, Washington. He went to the University of Washington, Seattle, in 1964, where he was a History Major and learned Russian. He was drafted into the Marine Corps in 1968 and served two years, mostly on Okinawa. He returned to the University of Washington where he earned an MA in Russian Area Studies and a PhD in History. In 1972 and 1976 he served with the US State Department on American exhibits in the Soviet Union. He taught at SUNY Plattsburgh and Hamilton College before coming to Muhlenberg College in 1984. He has travelled extensively in the old Soviet Union, the Far East and Western Europe.

Robert Croskey's articles on topics including the Russian period in Alaska, early Anglo -Russian relations, Byzantine Greeks in Russia, the Soviet study of Japan, and Tolstoy's estate Iasnaia Poliana have appeared in Slavic Review, Slavonic Review, Jahrbücher für Geschichte Osteuropas, Acta Slavica Iaponica, Oxford Slavonic Papers and the Tolstoy Studies Journal.
